Since We’re Still Here takes place during the Cold War, the average townsperson's attitudes towards Russians (or those perceived as "Soviets") will reflect what they’ve heard from anti-communist news and politicians. This will carry into NPC interactions with player characters. NPCs may treat Russian/“Soviet” characters or characters with Russian/Slavic/Slavic-seeming surnames noticeably, but not too dramatically, different from other characters. At best, NPCs will be apprehensive and a bit awkward around them; at worst, cold and standoffish, even occasionally passive aggressive. Certain plots may incorporate elements from the Cold War and paranoia.
However, NPCs will not commit hate crimes, enforce any sort of segregation, or be physically or verbally aggressive towards PCs for their ethnicity or race. We want to stress to players that the NPCs are stereotypes of 1961 America, not accurate true-to-life depictions of people from that time period. On that note, we would like to point to one of our rules: treat sensitive content with respect. Using the NPCs to be offensive or triggering — this includes using slurs, targeting player characters for racial/ethnic violence, or “rules-lawyering” what is “accurate” — will result in a warning or a ban at the mod team's discretion.
There is a BIG difference between historical flavor and historical accuracy. We are here to have fun with a game set in the time period, not to recreate it.
